. These sessions are for the more social rower who wishes to join in with more experienced members and increase their basic workload in the boat. Sessions are open to any member, Saturday mornings 5.15am for a 5.30 push off and Sundays at 6.00 am. Please contact the Regatta Secretary or President for more information.
Throughout the year the Club hosts many social activities: the most popular activities are the regular "Big Boat Nights" , “Club Regatta Series” and "Glowing Rowing" ...read on……
Big Boat Nights - these are often held during quiet times between regattas and are well attended by all members: crews are selected by the “name out of a hat” method with scant regard to abilities, age, gender, or which side you row (these nights are usually held in eights) and “racing” between crews begins in earnest over 500 meters. These nights are always concluded with drinks and nibbles on the banks of the Ross River as the sun sets over another glorious day in tropical Townsville ….
Glowing Rowing - this is held once a year (usually in early/mid December) and is a great excuse to have fun towards Christmas - various boats are decorated with Christmas Tree lights the length of the boat and around the riggers, and the rowers attach glow-sticks to themselves and the many family members who are part of the fun of the night .... once the boats and rowers are suitably "lit up", crews are boated and row of in to the sunset for a great social row .... as light fades glowing "Christmas tree" boats and rowers are seen gliding along the Ross River, and must be a strange sight for those walking along the river banks .... As usual, such an event would not complete with a BBQ and some drinks afterwards ....
All of our social activities are family orientated with many partners and children being part of the fun.
Club Regatta Series - In the second half of 2008, T&JCU resumed its popular Club Regatta Series: a series of intra-Club regattas spaced out over the year. During 2011, each regatta will be in a different class of boat, meaning that members gain competitive experience in a variety of different boats, in a friendly but still competitive atmosphere. Keep an eye out for upcoming events on ‘what’s coming up’ or contact the Regatta Secretary.
